Tesla Reports 1.74 Million FSD Users Under Comp-Linked Definition

The automaker’s latest shareholder letter reveals that its active software count includes lifetime owners, a metric directly tied to Elon Musk’s 2025 performance award milestones.

Tesla has reported that its Full Self-Driving software now has 1.74 million active users, a figure that rises sharply when viewed through the specific accounting methods tied to executive compensation.

In its third-quarter 2026 shareholder letter, the company stated that this number reflects a 67 percent increase from the same period in the prior year. A footnote in the document clarifies that the metric aligns with the terms of the 2025 CEO Performance Award. Consequently, the count includes both customers who pay monthly and those who purchased the feature as a one-time upfront cost, provided the vehicle remains active.

This accounting method is significant because reaching 10 million active subscriptions is a key operational milestone required for Elon Musk to earn his 2025 pay package. The inclusion of lifetime owners means that many subscribers were sold unsupervised self-driving capabilities, a feature the company has not yet fully delivered to the public.

Tesla ceased selling the software as a one-time purchase on February 14, 2026. Since that date, new customers in the United States have been required to subscribe at a rate of $99 per month. However, individuals who paid upfront at prices reaching $15,000 prior to that cutoff continue to be included in the active count. The only exclusions from this metric are free trials, though the company did not specify how many of the 1.74 million users are currently paying the monthly fee.

The same compensation-driven accounting appears in other reported figures. Tesla’s cumulative delivery count, now at 10.2 million, includes unsupervised Robotaxis placed into commercial operation. This approach mirrors the pay package’s requirement of 20 million vehicle deliveries, a milestone the company considered probable as of June 30.

The letter also highlights that more than 75 percent of new deliveries in North America included FSD subscriptions during the third quarter. Tesla described this as a nearly twenty-percentage-point sequential increase and suggested that the software is driving demand in available markets. However, the company did not define whether this attach rate includes introductory offers or how many of those buyers continue paying after the initial period.

Musk’s 2025 award consists of 12 tranches, each requiring specific market capitalization and operational targets. These operational goals include delivering 20 million vehicles, achieving 10 million active FSD subscriptions, deploying one million Optimus robots, and operating one million robotaxis. Tesla added 260,000 net FSD subscriptions in the third quarter, its best quarterly performance to date. At this rate, reaching 10 million would take approximately eight years; at the trailing twelve-month pace, it would take closer to 12 years. The award period extends until 2035.

For investors in the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley regions, where EV adoption is growing, the distinction between subscription models and upfront purchases is becoming increasingly relevant. While Tesla knows the exact number of monthly payers, the lack of transparency on this specific metric leaves a gap in understanding the true recurring revenue base of the software business.
