FBI Halts Alleged Plot Against Rep. Self

Federal agents detained a McKinney teenager accused of planning to strike at a Texas congressman during a major fundraising event.

Federal investigators have taken a 17-year-old from McKinney into custody following an alleged scheme to eliminate Representative Keith Self, the Republican congressman from Texas’ third district. The arrest, which occurred on October 5, marks a significant escalation in security concerns for the lawmaker as he campaigns for his third term. While the teen’s identity remains under wraps pending the ongoing investigation, campaign officials confirmed the detention to local media, noting that the threat was taken with utmost seriousness by the congressional team.

The timeline of the incident reveals a rapid response by both federal and local authorities. Self’s campaign manager stated that the team was notified by U.S. Capitol Police on October 6, just one day after the FBI secured the suspect. According to the campaign, federal agents believed the teenager had been radicalized and was under active surveillance. Investigators indicated that the youth was planning a terrorist attack on behalf of ISIS, with the specific intent of targeting the congressman at a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17. The event was set to feature former Cowboys players and other high-profile guests, making it a prime target for the alleged plot.

Representative Self, who has a background in military combat zones, described his reaction to the news as measured rather than panicked. He noted that his experience in the field helped him maintain composure, understanding that the primary concern was determining if the suspect was a lone wolf. Self explained that his team increased their situational awareness immediately upon learning of the arrest. He added that his wife, a military spouse for 25 years, also handled the situation with familiarity and gravity, recognizing the inherent risks of public service.

Despite the severity of the threat, the congressman kept his schedule intact. He attended the chili cook-off as planned, where he judged 19 different chilies and three pots of beans. Self described the event as delightful and noted that nothing happened to disrupt the proceedings. Since then, he has continued his campaigning, including poll greeting sessions, asserting that the incident would not deter him from alerting voters to what he views as a critical political ideology.

The alleged plot unfolds against a backdrop of heightened political and community tension in the district. In September, Self introduced a nonbinding resolution denouncing Sharia law and affirming the U.S. Constitution as the supreme law. This stance aligns with local debates in McKinney, where the city council recently approved expansion plans for a local mosque after contentious public hearings and a subsequent effort to recall several council members. Evan Hunt, Self’s opponent in the upcoming midterm election, also condemned the plot on social media, highlighting the widespread attention the incident has received.

The stakes for the congressional race appear to be rising as the investigation continues. The FBI Dallas office has been contacted for further details but has not yet provided additional information. For now, the campaign is moving forward with a heightened level of vigilance, balancing the need for public engagement with the safety protocols necessitated by the federal arrest.
