Billion Dollar Gains: How Anthropic Backers Stack Up at $965 Billion Valuation
Early and late investors in the AI giant are sitting on massive paper wealth as the company prepares for a public listing this year.

For the investors who took an early bet on Anthropic, the coming public listing represents a potential windfall of historic proportions. With the company expected to go public this year at a valuation reaching up to $2 trillion, the stakes held by venture capitalists and early backers are already substantial. Even before the official IPO pricing, the current private market valuation of $965 billion has turned many of these positions into multi-billion dollar assets.
The most significant individual gain belongs to Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO. According to PitchBook data, Schmidt participated in Anthropic's Series A round in 2021 when the startup was valued at just $461 million. He currently holds approximately 1% of the company. At the latest private valuation, that small percentage slice is worth nearly $10 billion, a massive increase from his initial entry point.
Institutional investors also see significant returns. Iconiq Capital wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year when the company was valued at $183 billion. That late-stage investment is now valued at $17 billion. Analysts suggest this position could double in value once the IPO is complete. Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D round, has poured over $1 billion into the AI lab. Their stake is currently worth $14 billion.
Other major players have entered the market more recently but still see strong returns. Sequoia Capital first backed Anthropic earlier this year when the valuation had already climbed to $380 billion. Their $3 billion investment secured about 1% ownership, meaning their capital has already more than doubled in value. Sound Ventures, launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round. They subsequently added another $400 million to their position. The firm's stake is now worth billions, though Kutcher left the venture this year to launch a new firm.
Spark Capital offers perhaps the most dramatic growth story among the known board members. The firm invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C when Anthropic was valued at $5 billion. That initial position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold to a value of $7 billion. As the company moves toward its public debut, these figures underscore the rapid appreciation of assets in the leading AI lab.
The upcoming listing is expected to be one of the largest in recent history. While the final price will be determined by the market, the current private valuations indicate that both early and late-stage investors are in a strong position. The transition from private to public markets will test whether these high valuations can be sustained in the broader stock exchange environment.
