A tense standoff has emerged in Hebron as the Israeli military presses forward with aggressive demolition and search operations following a deadly ambush. The conflict centers on the northern entrance to the city, where troops and Civil Administration personnel moved to tear down illegally constructed buildings on Saturday. This action marks a significant escalation in a counterterrorism campaign triggered by a shooting attack that killed two soldiers just the previous day.
The immediate catalyst for this operation was Friday’s attack at Yehuda Junction, which claimed the lives of St.-Sgt. Ron Yonatan Roytman and Sgt. Yuval Shai Svilem. Military officials stated that the demolitions, executed in close proximity to the shooting scene, were designed to enforce law and order. They also aimed to eliminate potential security threats posed by the structures, suggesting a direct link between the physical infrastructure and the tactical vulnerability exposed by the attack.
The scale of the response involves a complex coalition of forces. The Judea Brigade commands the broader campaign, supported by troops from the Duvdevan and Maglan units, the Paratroopers Brigade, Givati reconnaissance reservists, and the Border Police. Intelligence guidance is being provided by the Shin Bet security agency. In the initial phase of this operation, soldiers have searched approximately 200 locations. These searches were conducted to rule out the presence of weapons and terrorist activity, resulting in the arrest of ten suspects so far.
Military assessments indicate that roughly 2,000 residents in the target area belong to the Ja'aba clan. This group is affiliated with Hamas and is identified as the origin of the gunmen responsible for Friday’s attack. Central Command officials identified the attackers as Hamouda and Firas al-Ja'aba, both Hamas affiliates who came directly from the Ein Dir-Baha neighborhood. This specific targeting highlights the precision, or perceived precision, of the intelligence gathering behind the operation.
Logistical challenges have arisen as the military began evacuating the al-Jalda and Ein Dir-Baha neighborhoods on Friday evening. These are densely populated districts in western Hebron within the Palestinian urban area. Civilians who requested to leave were permitted to exit temporarily through designated checkpoints run by the Shin Bet and the IDF. Officials argue that removing residents allows for thorough searches of homes and surroundings for terrorist infrastructure, weapons caches, and explosives laboratories without endangering civilians. The area is widely known to the security establishment as a hub for Hamas operatives.
The situation remains fluid, with officials planning a situational assessment on Saturday to determine if the operation will expand. Brig.-Gen. Kobi Heller, commander of the IDF’s West Bank Division, has already broadened arrest operations and searches in the Nablus, Jenin, and Tulkarm areas, as well as other locations in Samaria. This expansion occurs amid concerns that Hamas leadership abroad is attempting to orchestrate attacks ahead of upcoming elections, adding a layer of political urgency to the military’s on-the-ground actions.
